Mix & Work: Punctuated Equilibrium. Luxury in the digital age.
Stephen Jay Gould, the great evolutionary biologist, introduced me to a beautiful phrase in the early 90s at a talk at the Marxist Center in NYC: Punctuated Equilibrium. It obeys Mark Twain’s adage “Eschew Surplusage.” Our standard representations of evolution as a tree with different nodes breaking away from preceding nodes generally does not represent a temporal dimension. The premise of Punctuated Equilibrium is that things stay the same for a long time, but at a moment of stress, when a crucial change is introduced to an ecosystem, the change is fast, and the effects radical.
The digital age is just such a punctuation, a radical and fast bend in the way we communicate. Those who do not adapt go the way of the Dodo.
